Shirshasana(Topsy – turvy Posture)

Kneel down and make a finger lock by inter-locking fingers of both the hands. Place the finger lock on the seat in front of you, keeping the elbows apart and place the forehead on the floor supported by finger lock. Start raising the feet so that the calf muscles touch the thighs. Breathe normally. This is the first stage and should be maintained perfectly, because the balance during the final posture depends mainly on this stage. In the next stage, raise the knees first and then slowly raise the feet so that the complete body is straight like a pillar. This is the final stage. Breathe normally. Come back to the original position by reversing the process.

Caution: Avoid jerky movements at all stages. Maintenance of balance comes by continuous practice. For securing proper balance, elbows are to be placed firmly on the ground in the same line as the finger lock.

Warning: In the beginning this asana should be done only for 10 seconds with the help of someone. Then the time could be increased gradually by half-a-minute every week. Those suffering from discharge from the ears, iritis, high blood pressure, heart problems, severe cervical and lumbar spondylitis should not practice this asana. It should be practised under the guidance of an expert.

Benefits: Improves the blood supply to the brain and working efficiency of the nervous system. Endocrine glands also become healthier as they get good blood supply. This asana is helpful in case of dyspepsia and constipation. It improves the functions of the reproductive glands and heart muscles.
