Why is it necessary to take a special look at films on music and musicians? The aware is that such films create a peculiar aesthetic and conceptual situation. In such films music is related to the cinematic art in two ways. Firstly, music is present and operative as in any other film. That is, at one level or other it functions as a component of a total filmic whole. Secondly, music also becomes subject or a theme in such films. It therefore becomes a controlling and channelizing centre. All the creative forces converge at music and operate from it.
In music-films, music itself becomes a theme. The theme can be a musical form, an instrument or a personality.Music-film means a film which enables us to have musical experience apart from other concomitants like the literary or the visual experience, etc. Educational music-films rely on narration; the documentary type use commentary and persuasion; the biographical music-films depend on chronology and historical perspective, while the informative ones concentrate on an uninvolved statement and neutral presentation of facts.
Music should be allowed to play a proper role in a music-film is to put forward a plea that proper music be used in a music-film. Both music and cinema are independent arts possessing their own characteristic expressive powers. It is therefore inevitable that their coming together should require a careful balancing of creative forces and a skillful use of their respective strengths and weaknesses. It is on this background that we have to examine the inter-art relationship and arrive at a conceptual decision about the nature and function of film-music. This in turn will clarify the role of music in a music-film.
