CONCH – SHANKHA

A Shankha is a conch shell of ritual and religious importance in Hinduism. In Hindu mythology, the shankha is a sacred emblem of the Hindu preserver god Vishnu. It is believed that the sound of sacred OM, which is known to be the first sound of creation, is associated with the sound of conch.

The conch is a wind instrument and is extensively used in the music of the temple rituals. There are conches which have a bright tone and conches which have a pathetic tone. The former type is used in temples and in martial music and latter in funeral processions. Every warrior in the past had conch of his own and he used it on the battle field. The Panchajanya of Lord Krishna, the Devadutta of Arjuna and the Poundram of Bhima may be cited as examples.
